About the Recipe

Coffee kanten is a popular Japanese dessert that you'll find prepacked in every Japanese supermarket. On the other hand, you can make the real thing yourself in a jiffy. As you probably know, kanten AKA agar agar, is a non-animal seaweed substitute for gelatin that's full of fibre and calorie free.

Ingredients

300ml water


2g kanten powder (agar agar)


25g sugar


1 tbsp instant coffee granules


150ml double cream



2 tsp sugar

Preparation

put the water in a saucepan, add the kanten powder and whisk over a high heat for 1 min


turn off the heat, add the sugar & the coffee powder, then whisk for 30 secs


leave the coffee kanten to cool for a few mins, then pour into glasses


pipe the whipped cream onto the top of the coffee kanten


put them in the fridge to firm


whip the cream until firm and mix in the 2 tsp of sugar


pipe the whipped cream onto the top of the coffee kanten


your coffee kanten is ready to serve
